Napoleon Dynamite Costume For Halloween

Napoleon dynamite is an American independent film that has garnered a following, and rose beyond more than its creators ever thought it would be. It was co-written by Jared Hess and Jerusha Hess, and is starring Jon Heder. This was Heder’s breakout role in Hollywood, and later on went to star in the hit movies The Bench Warmers and Blades of Glory. The movie’s debut was in the Sundance Festival in January of 2004, which is an American independent film festival being held in Utah annually, and is the largest independent film festival in the entire United States of America. Napoleon Dynamite was given limited release later on in the year in June, but because of the clamor about the movie, it was given a wide release later on in the same year, going on to gross more than $44.5 million.

Napoleon Dynamite has a simple story, yet this simplicity is what caught people’s attention. Some of the words that were used to describe the movie are “fresh,” and Michael Atkinson of The Village Voice praised the film as “an epic, magisterially observed pastiche on all-American geek-hood, flooring the competition with a petulant shove.” Although it has garnered a lot of praise, it has also received almost as much criticism, with people saying that the “brand of stupid” that Napoleon Dynamite has just isn’t funny anymore.

Be that as it may, Napoleon Dynamite has become somewhat iconic to the current generation of young people. Various items and references to the movie are seen via “Pedro for President” t-shirts and Napoleon Dynamite glasses that have become quite popular. The Napoleon Dynamite costume is also one that is very popular during Halloween season, partly because it’s funny, but mostly because it is so easy to do. Here are a few suggestions on how you can create your own Napoleon Dynamite costume, and even the other characters as well.

1.       Napoleon Dynamite – One of the most prominent features of Napoleon Dynamite is his hair, which is a small, strawberry blond Afro that is parted on the left. If you cannot find one that matches this look, you can opt to buy one of the more popular black colored Afros and just customize it to look like Napoleon Dynamite’s hair. Trim it down so that it is the right size, and bleach it so that it will become blonde. Next, you also need the iconic glasses. Your Napoleon Dynamite costume is simply not complete without the glasses. Get a pair of old aviator styled sunglasses and take out the lenses. As for the clothes, the most recognizable outfit of Napoleon Dynamite’s is a “Vote for Pedro” t-shirt, which he wore a lot through the movie. This along with khaki skinny pants and brown moon boots, and you’re good to go. If you’re having a hard time looking for boots that are the same style, you can opt to buy an imitation one form e-bay or Amazon, or look for plain brown leather boots of the same style.

2.       Pedro Sanchez – Pedro was a transferee from Mexico in Napoleon’s school, so his outfits really had a Spanish looking style. If you want to wear this character from Napoleon Dynamite, you can choose to put something together yourself, or you can access plenty of websites on the internet that sell “Pedro Kits,” which include a wig, mustache and bolo tie. You only need to wear this over a polo shirt and a coat, so that is why it is probably better to just put together something yourself. This costume is best when worn with someone who is also wearing a Napoleon Dynamite costume, because Pedro is more characteristic as Napoleons friend and sidekick.

3.       Kip Dynamite – Kip is Napoleon’s older brother, and is a somewhat ridiculous human being. To make this character from Napoleon Dynamite, the most popular one is his marital arts costume, which consists of a blue shirt with the arms cut off, gray sweatpants, and blue wrist bands. The other popular Kip Dynamite costume is the ridiculous outfit he had on when he went out dancing with LaFawnda, his girlfriend, which consisted of a black do-rag, tight black pants, and a silky shirt that is open at the chest. Don’t forget the large, silver bling necklace! To top it off, either grow or draw on a pathetic, wispy mustache.

4.       LaFawnduh Lucas – LaFawnda is Kip’s girlfriend whom he met online. When they finally met in person, Kip and LaFawnduh’s style were so contrasting that they immediately became iconic as a duo. If you want to use this character from Napoleon Dynamite, you can wear anything that is simply over the top. The trick to making sure people understand whom you are portraying, especially since LaFawnduh is a character that can be played by both men and women, make sure that you have your very own Kip character trailing around you. One of the funnier examples of a LaFawnduh would be a white man with brown makeup all over him, dressed in drag. People dressed in either the Kip of LaFawnduh costume are also best paired with someone wearing a Napoleon Dynamite costume.

5.       Uncle Rico – Uncle Rico is also a character from Napoleon Dynamite that a lot of people like to make use of, especially because uncle Rico is so ridiculously outdated. He is the stereotypical guy who peaked in high school, and now lives in his car. His outfits consist of bell-bottom jeans, a vest over a white t-shirt, and a sports headband worn around your forehead. Your main prop can be a football, and you should have the personality of someone who has nothing to live for other than to keep trying to relive the golden years. Uncle Rico is also a character from Napoleon Dynamite that goes better when it is pair or worn along with the rest of the characters.

Have some fun this Halloween and dress up in your Napoleon Dynamite costume along with your friends! Recreate scenes from the movie, attend parties in character, or just plain have fun looking like the loveable characters from the hit movie that gave us all new heroes in underdogs.
