The Holiday Style Guide for Your Family

Being a parent can make it pretty difficult to keep up with all the trends going in and out of fashion every season.  Who has time for magazines and style tips when you’ve got a spouse and kids running around?  Well, that’s what’s great about the holidays!  They’re all about tradition, and even if the word “trendy” hasn’t been an active part of your vocabulary in ages, you and your family can look so sophisticated and classy, people will think you’ve hired an army of nannies and a stylist.

Here are some simple looks for your family that can be pulled together easily and will work for most holiday events, and some websites where you can go to find all the things you need.

For Dad

Start with a pair of tweed trousers that fit right.  You can find men’s pants for incredibly reasonable prices at Express.com.  Next, get a pinstriped button-down.  Keep it simple, go with white with navy or gray stripes.  Over that, wear a cardigan in either cranberry or navy- I prefer cranberry, it’s more festive and never looks dull.  Both of these things can also be found at Express.com. For shoes, go with dark leather loafers.  For these, I recommend upgrading to Topshop.com.  It’s a bit pricier, but you won’t regret it when you see the quality and craftsmanship.

For Mom

Start with a floral tie-neck blouse or tunic in a loose fit.  I love the selection they have of blouses at Modcloth.com.  Go with taupe or another neutral shade.  Over the blouse, wear a boyfriend-fit blazer in a darker shade.  Leave it unbuttoned and belt it at the waist with a patent leather skinny belt.  Pair this with some chic wide leg trousers in a shade that compliments the blazer, but doesn’t match precisely.  For these, check out Madewell.com.   As for the shoes, you’ll want heeled (high or low) booties, and you’ll find the best selection of these at Anthropologie.com.

For Brother

For boys, I actually recommend buying a nice boys’ suit if he doesn’t already have one, then having him leave the jacket at home and put on a sweater over the button up shirt.  The reason for this is that stores like SophiasStyle.com carry suits at incredibly reasonable prices, and you’ll actually save money by buying a full suit as opposed to buying individual pieces at a department store.  Plus, he’ll have the suit jacket for more formal events (weddings, the Christmas pageant at school or church, etc.).  SophiasStyle.com also carries nice dress shoes for boys, if he doesn’t already have some, so you can find his whole ensemble in one place.

For Sister
