Dodge City’s Boothill Casino Says Jackpot was “A Malfunction”

When local resident Bonnie Gobin decided to try her luck at the slot machines at Dodge City’s new Boothill Casino, she never realized she would end up the first patron to be denied a jackpot payout.

She played few machines and then ended up at the “Jaws” penny slot machine. She stuck a twenty dollar bill into the machine, spun several times and then all of a sudden the machine indicated that she had won a JACKPOT! It read “call attendant for a hand payout”.

Much to her dismay, the attendant told her that the machine had malfunctioned and all she would receive would be $3.68 even though the machine displayed JACKPOT – CONGRATULATIONS on the screen.

Casino staff later explained that the machines were malfunctioning because the server was down which was causing problems with all of the slot machines. Gobin said they allowed patrons to play the machines for two hours while the server was down and gave no indication that there could be a malfunction.

The Kansas Gaming Commission was not notified of the incident until the story appeared in the local newspaper.  Most states require that casinos immediately notify the gaming commission for disputes that exceed $500.00 and require that the machine in dispute be taken out of service.

The Kansas Gaming Commission launched an investigation which eventually led to at least one staff termination.

The casino stated that the voluntary resignation of the general manager a week later was unrelated to the investigation or the incident.
