Neoprene is a typical example of one of the many ways in which foam rubber can be used. Its usefulness as an insulation material is demonstrated as foam neoprene is used in the manufacture of wet suits for divers. Neoprene is extremely flexible, has remarkable tolerance to temperatures and is flame retardant as well as being resistant to oil and chemicals. It has a good many uses such as laptop sleeves, fan-belts for cars and insulation tape.

Neoprene, originally known as Duprene, was invented in the early 1930s by scientists working for a company that manufactured similar materials. However the early research that led to its development was carried out by another scientist who experimented with vinyl-acetylene and reactions involving this type of material.

In the sporting world, neoprene has also found a niche. The makers of skate liners use it in the manufacture of some of their top of the range products as it gives good support for ankles, for example, and added protection against abrasions if the wearer takes a tumble. In horse riding, neoprene is used in the production of cinch, a thin material which sits under the saddle and is comfortable for both the horse and its rider. The reason for this is that the neoprene prevents the saddle from slipping.

One company has even incorporated neoprene into thermal shorts giving warming support for sports injuries around the pelvis and hip area.
