Is Herbalife A Pyramid Scheme? The Truth Behind Pyramid Schemes

For all its recent achievements as a company, Herbalife is still regularly accused of being a pyramid scam.  But why?  What is it about the Herbalife business model that attracts such criticism? And what does the term ‘pyramid scheme’ even mean?  In order to explain everything, I am going to tell you a little story about pyramids.

For more than four and a half thousand years, the Great Pyramid of Giza has stood as one of the most impressive structures ever created by man, and it provides the perfect metaphor for illustrating the dangers of becoming involved with a pyramid scam.

Imagine that you are standing at the bottom of the pyramid. In front of you is the towering structure 480ft high. At the top of the pyramid is a pot of the Pharoah’s gold. A professional-looking man is standing beside you and he offers you the chance to claim the pot of gold for yourself, if you can scale the pyramid and pluck the gold before it topples and is gone forever.

But there is a problem. The man at the bottom of the pyramid has made the same offer to thousands of other people, and as you climb up the first few steps you realise that there are hundreds of other people already further up the pyramid, making their way towards your gold. The further up the pyramid you get, the more congested it becomes. And you can see, at the top of the pyramid, the man in the suit from the bottom is already there, helping himself to the gold.

As you glance down, you see more and more people climbing onto the pyramid, without any hope at all of making it to the top before all the Pharoah’s gold has gone, and doing nothing but adding to the already over-congested scrimmage. Exasperated, you give up, and begin the long climb back down the Pyramid with your pockets empty.

Just like in our story, in a pyramid scam there is money to be had for a small elite at the top, usually those who are operating the scam. Other people are fooled into believing they can get their hands on the big bucks too, and so invest significant amounts of money to get a slice of the pie. But in all cases, the money just isn’t there, the pyramid collapses, and those near the bottom lose everything.

Damagingly, Herbalife is often accused of being a pyramid scheme by their own Distributors.  Or, to be more precise, by people who have bought into the company but have found it very difficult to make any money. They have done everything that people tell them to do but have still failed, so they come to the conclusion that it was never possible to make any money in the first place, and that Herbalife must be a pyramid scheme.

But this is not true. Herbalife is certainly not a pyramid scheme.  The Herbalife business model has a strong product which underpins it, and making money in the company depends on a Distributors ability to sell the product to people as much as it does on their ability to simply add people into their business. Every distributor makes or breaks their own business, and the same opportunities are there for all.
