Double Layer Dvdr to Record Double the Data on Single Disk

A Double-Layer DVDR is quite different from the standard DVD format. It has a second physical layer within disc itself. The recording or playing drive with Double layer compatibility accesses the second layer by passing the laser rays through the first semi-transparent layer. DVD-R and DVD+R both kinds of discs come with Dual layer format. These gained the popularity mainly because of having more storing capacity. Generally, these have 8.5 GB per disc capacity while the single layer discs have storing capacity only 4.7 GB. Access can be made to any of the layer without disturbing the data recorded over the other layer. Though these are little costlier than single layer discs but the advantages justify this cost difference.

Memorex, HP, Sony, MoserBaer and Verbatim are popular brands of DL-DVDR. Verbatim DL-DVDs come with 10x and 6x recording speed, while these of Memorex come with 8X writing speed. The double Layer DVD doesn’t mean that users can write the data on both the sides instead it creates 2 layers on same side of DL-DVD; therefore, it should be handled like any other single CD/DVD. To get the better recording results and repeated access with equal ease, it is must to protect these DVDRs too from scratches or moisture.

Different recording softwares are available online and many of these are free. Most popular DVD/CD writing software is Nero. Many discs writers come along with this software; free updated versions can also be downloaded. Another popular disc writing software is Roxio. In a double layer recordable DVD, both recording layers have their own wobbled pre-groove to control rotation speed as well as to be addressed. However, contents table is recorded only on the primary recordable layer, which is known as L ‘0′.

Double layer recordable DVDs allow the users to record longer home movies and consolidated homemade movie projects in a single disc. 8.5GB of uncompressed disc space is a great place to store valuable PC’s data safe.
