Keep Fido Safe This Summer With A Dog Life Jacket

Having dog life jackets is a must for your dog if you frequently go boating or are around water, even if you have a pool. Human life jackets and dog life jackets work in the same way as they keep you buoyant. Dog life jackets are very easy to use as you just need to strap the dog in and make sure all the attachments are snug without being tight. Dog life jackets are made specifically for ach dog size and will differ depending on weight and type of dog.

XS dog life jackets are recommended for Bichon, Pekingese, Silky terriers, toy poodle sand other dogs that are between 7 to 15 pounds. Very small dogs like Yorkshires, Pomeranians and Chihuahuas should use XXS life jackets. Dogs 15 to 20 pounds, such as Jack Russell terriers, Dachshunds and Welsh Terriers would use S life jackets. There are also large life jackets for bigger dogs.

Dog life jackets have become much more comfortable as the material allows for proper draining and is breathable. They also dry very easily and are highly visible as they are brightly colored. Neoprene jackets can actually hurt your dog as many dogs become overheated and many times that neoprene jacket will chafe.

A little known fact is that not dogs all know how to swim. Some dogs actually don’t like the water because they become cold very quickly. Dog breeds such as greyhounds do not have a lot of body fat so they become cold very fast when in water. Other dogs have a phobia of water as they may have been through a traumatic experience as a puppy. Even the best dog swimmers should wear a life jacket as it can save your dogs life.

Labradors and retrievers absolutely love the water but they can become fatigued. If your dog is overweight, sick or very old then they can have trouble in the water. Your dog may reach a point where they have difficulty remaining afloat. This is much the same ass humans in the water and all humans are required to wear life jackets when out on the water so why not dogs too.

It is a good idea to make your dog wear the life jacket on land a few times so that they become accustomed to the life jacket. This way they will have one less thing to be anxious about when being introduced to water for the first time. To ensure that your dog loves the water you should gradually introduce them to the water and all the fun you can have in the water.

When choosing a life jacket you want one that fits your dog, is made of good breathable material and has a buoyancy rating. Always make sure your dog is within sight range when wearing a dog life jacket so they do not become entangled. By taking some time and care you will provide a great water experience and your dog will soon enjoy the water just as much as you do.

Dog life jackets are sized based on the length from the base of the tail to the base of the neck. If your dog is very overweight then you may need to go one size up for a good life jacket fit. Dogs with very long backs are recommended to go one size smaller as the life jacket may be too lose.
