Proper cleaning of paint brushes

Now that you have finished painting your home , you must be feeling a tremendous sense of accomplishment , and rightly so. Theres no greater satisfaction than doing your own job with your own hands, and doing it well . But the job isn’t over yet. If you leave the cleaning up for later, you may end up ruining your paint brushes as the paint hardens on them. So unless you fancy running out for fresh brushes every time you feel the need to paint, you should wrap up cleaning your brushes immediately after you finish painting.

Cleaning paint brushes does not require much effort . First , take the brush and run the bristles against the paint cans inside rim. This will help to release any paint that may still be in between the bristles of the brush. Second , wipe the brush back and forth either on a rag or piece of newspaper to scrape off as much paint as possible. While these first two steps are applicable for all paints, the next step depends on whether water-based or oil-based paint was used. If unsure about the paint type , examine the can for relevant information.

If water-based paint is used, the brush can be cleaned by hand in a can of lukewarm water using common detergent. If the paint is oil-based, paint thinner or turpentine should be used instead of water. Move the brush in and out of the can with the paint thinner until no more paint comes off. Rinse and repeat until theres no trace of any color coming out. Over time a brush may become stained, but dont stop rinsing until youre sure theres no paint left. For safetys sake, you can use gloves. Once the paint is removed, rinse thoroughly in running water. The next step is again common for all brushes.

When the brush is thoroughly clean and most of the water has been shaken out, wrap a clean piece of paper around the bristles, leaving just the tip of the brush exposed, snap a rubber band around it, and hang the brush up to dry. Most paint brushes have a small hole drilled through the top of the handle for hanging to dry on string .

One useful trick is to wrap the bristles in a piece of tissue or toilet paper while the brush is still wet . When the paper dries it contracts, pulling the bristles into shape . The next time you want to use the brush, the bristles will be straight and even. You will be spared those troublesome side bristles that stick out and daub bits of paint in the wrong places. Even if you cant hang up the brush, ensure its not resting on its head, as it will then dry misshapen. Standing it on the back of the handle works well . Take care not to leave a brush to be cleaned soaking in water as this may loosen the bristles. If the brush is made from natural bristle, dipping it in oil after cleaning can soften it. Misshapen synthetic brushes can sometimes be corrected by soaking them in hot water.

Follow these simple steps, and the next time you start to paint, you will have a perfect set of brushes ready for you.
