String Changing On Your Guitar

After some time, your strings will sound dull and you will miss the bright sound they produced when you first brought the guitar home. The reality is that strings should be changed every few weeks for those who play their guitars every day. The type of guitar you have affects the process of changing strings, but regardless of which guitar you’re playing, string changing is a necessary skill to have.

Like most beginners, you’re probably playing a steel-stringed acoustic guitar. All you will need to start changing all six strings is a new set of strings to put on the guitar. Begin by turning the tuners on your headstock until all the strings currently on your guitar are loose enough to unwind from the tuning pegs. The next step is to remove the pegs on your bridge that hold each string in place. Once you have done so, you’re ready to begin putting the new strings on your guitar.

Since your strings are probably curled up inside of a paper sheath, the next thing you will need to do is locate the largest one in the set and remove it from the wrapper. find the end with the metal ball, and insert it into the appropriate hole in the bridge (the one for the low “E” string). When it is in the hole, place the peg that was holding the old strings inside the bridge into the hole on top of it. While pressing down on the peg, pull up on the string you just put into the hole so that it’s apparent the ball on the end of the string is against the bottom of the peg.

Next, take the string all the way to the top of the neck, stick it through the lowest slot in the nut, and slide the end of the string through the hole of the appropriate tuning peg. When it is through the hole, pull it through so that you leave enough slack for two or three tight wraps with your string-winder or just your hand. Turn the tuning peg so that the string has wrapped tightly around it two or three times. It will take some practice to know when you have enough slack for just these few wraps. While you are winding the string around the peg, hold the string tight against the fingerboard so that it doesn’t come loose from the tuner. Repeat this process for all five remaining strings.

For electric guitars, the process is similar, except that your strings will either go through the back of the guitar (tremolo-style bridge) or through a bar and stop block (hard-rail bridge) instead of being held into the body of the guitar by a peg. After that, the process is the same. When all strings are wrapped around the tuning pegs and are secure in their proper places, clip the ends of the strings from the tuning pegs for safety. After this, all you have to do is tune up and enjoy the sound of your new string set.
