Planning a romantic honeymoon in the Dominican Republic

The Caribbean has long been a sought-after destination for newly-weds seeking a romantic honeymoon destination. And despite the very high cost of Caribbean honeymoons, the region shows no signs of decreasing in popularity. With golden sands, azure seas and blazing sunshine, it’s no wonder that so many couples want to spend their first weeks of marriage in this blissful paradise. However, if you’re planning a Caribbean honeymoon but you want an alternative to the expensive, all-inclusive resorts of Barbados and the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic could be the ideal choice. The Dominican Republic is relatively more affordable than its neighbours for couples on a budget, but still offers all the romantic features of a Caribbean getaway.

For starters, if you’re planning to spend some quality time alone, try avoiding the Dominican Republic’s more popular resort areas like Punta Cana and La Romana. A quieter area for a honeymoon is the Eastern Cibao, where you’ll find the stunning beaches of Playa Bonita and Playa Coson, as well as the dreamlike Salto Del Limon waterfall. Its seaside position also means that this area is well-known for its excellent seafood, including local speciality Dominican fried fish. Even more secluded is the southern area of the country. Despite its breathtaking scenery however, this area has fewer tourist developments and hotels, so honeymooning couples may find it difficult to locate accommodation here.

On the other hand, if you don’t mind the crowds at the popular resorts, you’ll find plenty of exciting activities in which to indulge as a couple. Bavaro is home to a Las Vegas-style casino that hosts a colourful stage show called Tropicalissimo, complete with dancers and ostentatious costumes. And on the grounds of Punta Cana Resort and Club, visitors will find the beautiful 600-acre Indigenous Eyes ecological reserve, which offers the chance to look at local wildlife in natural surroundings.

While it might not at first seem like the ideal place to visit on romantic holidays in the Dominican Republic, the charms of the capital Santo Domingo shouldn’t be overlooked. For instance, if you’re hoping to engage in local culture and history, the city’s charming Colonial Zone offers a unique glimpse into the Dominican Republic’s past, while the Plaza de la Cultura is home to several excellent museums and the National Theatre. Honeymooners should also head towards the Malecon boulevard where local operators run romantic carriage rides along the waterfront. And if you’re planning to treat yourself while on your honeymoon, visit upmarket neighbourhoods like Piantini and Naco, where you’ll find exclusive restaurants and unique shopping boutiques.

Of course, if all you want from a Dominican Republic honeymoon is rest, romance and relaxation, you won’t do better than booking a week at one of the country’s celebrated spa resorts. Many of these hotels will offer special honeymoon packages including couples spa treatments, so you won’t have to separate while you’re being indulged. Moreover, some resorts combine a spa, casino and golf course so if you ever get bored of being pampered, there’s plenty to keep you busy.
