Low Cost Short Term Health Insurance In Pennsylvania

Short term health insurance in Pennsylvania is extremely affordable and available from many of Pennsylvania’s largest health insurance companies. Traditionally, UnitedHealthOne, Assurant and Blue Cross offer the most competitive rates. Rates are typically one third of traditional health insurance plans and policies are usually approved within one day.

 

What Is Short Term Health Insurance?

 

Short term health insurance (temporary health insurance) is medical coverage that usually lasts between 30 days and 365 days. Rates are extremely low and many deductible options are available…often between $250 and $5,000. Premiums can be paid monthly, or in one single payment. Unexpected illnesses, accidents and catastrophic claims are usually a covered benefit. Pre-existing conditions, office visits and prescriptions are generally not covered (certain carriers offer office visit and prescription riders). Short term plans are exempt from HIPAA regulations. Thus, Pennsylvania health insurers do not have to approve or guarantee renewal of the policy or waive the pre-existing condition limitation if you are a federally eligible individual.

 

 

When Should Short Term Health Insurance Be Used?

 

Pennsylvania short term health insurance plans are the perfect fit if you are between jobs, recently graduated college, waiting for other coverage to begin or temporarily without health care coverage. If you have no major health issues and are facing a high Cobra payment, short-term coverage may be an option to consider. Contract workers with no benefits often need temporary coverage. If you are within 12 months of becoming eligible for Medicare benefits, this type of plan may be a solution. Seasonal employees without coverage are often ideal candidates for temporary coverage.

 

Also…if you are no longer eligible for coverage through a parent’s plan, a Pennsylvania short term plan can help. Health care reform will extend children’s coverage to age 26, unless the legislation is repealed. You do not have to be a student or be employed to qualify for temporary coverage.

 

What Is Typically Covered Under a Short Term Policy?

 

A short term plan typically covers catastrophic expenses such as daily hospital room and board, hospital charges for inpatient use of an operating, treatment or recovery room, hospital emergency treatment and professional fees of doctors and surgeons. Additionally, diagnostic X-ray and lab tests, prescription drugs, ground ambulance service, radiation therapy, rental of medical equipment and cost of an anesthetic are covered expenses on most plans.

 

Although most Pennsylvania temporary short term insurance plans don’t offer comprehensive office visit coverage, you still may receive a discount for using their network physicians (often 15%-25%). Major medical expenses that don’t meet the deductible may also be eligible for the same discount.
