Northern Soul Music and Culture

Do you think that America has a monopoly on producing the best talent and the most significant musical movements? Although many of the great musical genres and fashion trends have started in the United States, that doesn’t mean that was the only place where they grew and flourished. Soul music is most often associated with black American artists in the 1960′s and ‘70′s; northern soul music is a movement that was unique to the country of England during this time. Although it was based in what some deemed to be a dying genre, this movement inspired its own styles and venues, and still flourishes today.

One of the things that make the northern soul music movement so unique is that it wasn’t concerned with the latest artists and talent coming out of America at the time. There was a growing contingency of music lovers in the north of England that started to dislike the new style of music coming out of Motown, USA. They were looking for the more upbeat, bright tempo music that was popular in the early 1960′s, a type of music that record store owners started to refer to as northern soul, in honour of the customers who were seeking it.

Many consider the most unique feature of the northern soul movement to be the fact that it gave a second life to many artists who were considered to be failures by the fickle American music industry. Whereas many listeners in the U.S. were bored with the happy sound of the early Motown music, and were looking for something with a funkier feel, U.K. listeners in northern England were happy to celebrate these lost artists. For a while, the entire movement was sustained by the constant discovery of rare or forgotten soul artists.

Another unique feature of the northern soul music movement was the clubs, cafes, fashion styles, and dance moves that it inspired. Those who claimed to be a part of this movement were often leftovers from the British mod scene, and their clothing, like button-down Ben Sherman shirts, blazers with lots of buttons, and shrink-to-fit Levi’s jeans, soon became associated with soul lovers as well. As a show of solidarity with the Black Power movement that was so popular in the U.S. at the time, the clenched fist symbol was also adopted by northern soul movement members. There are many patches with the fist symbol and club names still around today.
