A Beach Barrier Protects Beaches from BP Oil Spill

Although officials are now trying to cap the broken pipes from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, the oil spill still proposes a danger to the beaches. Some places have already reported that oil has seeped up onto the beaches, transforming them from lovely white beach sand into a practical toxic wasteland. A beach barrier is the answer to preventing this from happening at more beaches. Some oil spill clean up companies are utilizing methods that have proven their effectiveness in other areas. One way is through the use of HESCO® Concertainer® units. These units have been used in the past to provide beach protection against floods, hurricanes and the U.S. military has used them in combat situations. They have not only saved beaches, but lives as well. They are practical and highly efficient and can be assembled in less than 30 minutes using a high powered sand blower. Also, they are cost effective and take only a few people, usually just two, to put the units up. There is hardly any time to waste with the oil spill washing up on the beaches, so having something that can be put up quickly gives people a huge advantage over the spill.  

Another kind of beach barrier is an absorbent boom. The booms do pretty much as their name indicates – absorb liquids. They have a strong mesh sleeve and a ploy skin filled with polypropylene. Also, they will not sink if they become saturated with oil. Link them together for huge oil spills, such as the BP oil spill, and they can provide miles of protection for just about any beach along the Gulf of Mexico.  By filling the HESCO® units and absorbent booms with Enviro-Armour™, a proprietary blend of U.S.D.A. food grade polymers, the oil can be encapsulated and transformed into a floating solid. The Enviro-Armour™ 403 is designed to bond molecularly to liquid organic hydrocarbons. Once the oil is made into a solid, it can be removed easier, making beach cleanup a less daunting task.   

In a recent test, Enviro-Armour™ was added to some booms as a beach barrier against a 75 gallon spill. Eight 3″ by 10 foot booms were needed for the booms filed with the agent while 41 booms of the same length were needed for the booms without the agent. Also, they also reduce the amount a company would have to pay to remove the waste by less than five times if the booms were used without the agent.
