Buying a Swimsuit: A Guide For Women of All Shapes and Sizes

Many women dread this time of year – Swimsuit season! Regardless of what size a woman is, she likely panics over picking out a swimsuit and worries that it fits her figure well. Naturally, every woman wants to highlight her best features while minimizing or even hiding her weak spots in any clothing, but this is especially true in bathing suits. Different body types have different needs.

Women with large busts

Women with large busts need something that can support them. For support, the best bikinis are the ones with halter-tops or molded under wire cups to keep everything in place even under pressure. A swimsuit with an extra strap across the back, along the bust line, can provide additional support.

Women with large hips and thighs

A woman with junk in her trunk end should look for swimsuits with boy cut bottoms. While being cute and comfy, boy shorts also help cover rear ends. Skirted bottoms on bikinis also provide coverage. Stay away from skimpy bottoms. Use the top to catch attention by using bright colors and patterns. Attention will be taken away from your bottom this way. Curvier women should consider the tankini. It also offers better coverage. Hipster bottoms can be used with tankinis. A one piece bathing suit that has cutouts on the sides can also be flattering.

Women with larger bellies

If you possess a large tummy, you should stick to a one-piece swimsuit. However, if you really want a two-piece bikini, look for with a halter-top that falls over the waist of your bikini bottoms. It helps flatter your stomach, but also helps elongate your body. This makes you appear taller and thus slimmer. You should also check to see if the shop has a swimsuit that offers tummy control. A bathing suit with prints will also take the focus away from your stomach and make you look slimmer.

Plus Size Women

Larger-sized women probably have the worst time picking out a swimsuit. When you are overweight, you are probably self-conscious enough just choosing regular clothes. Do not let this discourage you from enjoying some fun when in the sun. Choose dark colors like navy blue and black which help make you look slimmer. Stay away from swimsuits with horizontal stripes. These give the optical illusion that you are wider than you actually are. Though spandex is a good choice for swimsuit cloth because it stretches, it is essential that you get the right size swimsuit. Never squeeze into a swimsuit that is two sizes too small for ego reasons. Select the appropriate size, which will always look better on you. Nowadays, most stores let you mix and match tops and bottoms. This way, if you are top heavy or bottom heavy, you can make sure you get the correct size for each section. Keep in mind that swimsuits usually run smaller than regular clothes. You may have to get a size or two larger than wear normally.
